How to Maintain Your Vehicle's Battery For a Longer Lifespan
August 25, 2025
Welcome to CFI Tire Service, your automotive repair shop serving Council Bluffs and Glenwood, IA. Keeping your vehicle’s battery in good condition helps ensure reliable starts and avoids unexpected breakdowns. Here are practical tips to extend battery life.
Regular inspection
Look for corrosion, leaks, or physical damage. If something looks off, have a professional test the battery and charging system before you are stranded.
Keep it clean
Corrosion on terminals causes poor connections and reduced life. To clean:
- Turn off the engine and disconnect cables, starting with the negative terminal.
- Use a baking soda and water mixture to scrub corrosion from terminals and cable ends.
- Rinse with clean water, dry thoroughly, then reconnect—positive first, then negative.
Check the charge
A healthy fully charged battery often reads roughly 12.4 to 12.7 volts at rest with a multimeter (exact specs vary by battery type). Consistently low readings can mean it is time to recharge or replace—especially if the battery is old or has been deeply discharged.
Limit short drives
Frequent very short trips may not allow the alternator to replenish what the starter used. Combine errands when you can, or take an occasional longer drive if your use pattern is mostly short hops.
Secure the battery and switch off accessories
A loose battery can vibrate and fail internally. Before shutting down, turn off lights and accessories so you do not drain the battery while parked.
If you suspect a weak battery or slow cranking, visit CFI Tire Service in Council Bluffs or Glenwood. Our technicians can test the battery and charging system and advise on replacement when needed.
